Christmas came early forXianglutai Elementary School Students in Shanxi, China
“Can Santa travel across pacific and share some love to those struggling students overseas?” A Houston volunteer brought up the idea of Santa delivering Christmas presents to the students at Xianglutai Elementary School. The idea received passionate support from our volunteers and we decided to buy a set of winter warmers including a hat, a pair of gloves, and a scarf for every student.
Thanks to our local volunteers Zhou Yunbao and Guo Kai, more than 100 sets of winter warmers were delivered to students and teachers at Xianglutai Elementary School. To add a Western touch and also to educate students, Yunbao purposely dressed up as Santa Clause when distributing the gifts.
For most students, this was their first Christmas gift, but as long as we continue our spirit of sharing and giving, there will be more Christmas celebrations for the years to come!
Xianglutai Elementary School is located in Guangling Township of Datong city in Shanxi. Guangling Township ranks below the national poverty line and many students in town receive financial support from Overseas China Education Foundation (OCEF) to help them stay in school. The school is surrounded by mountains and access to transportation is not readily available. Students have to carry drinking water from a nearby village, and the principal hopes to solve the water problem by digging a well one day.
Winters can get awfully cold in the mountainous regions in northern China with temperature dropping below zero Fahrenheit, and snow falls temporarily hid the muddy roads and torn-down roofs underneath a layer of white coating in Xianglutai Elementary School.
With the help of our volunteers and donors, we are making a lasting impact in the lives of those children.
